Root Canal Treatment
Root canal therapy (also known as endodontic treatment) is necessary when the inside of the tooth (pulp) and surrounding area becomes infected. This can occur as a result of cracking, decay or injury. Root canal therapy can save a tooth that is badly damaged or decayed. The treatment involves the pulp of the tooth being removed and the cavity sealed. Thereafter, the tooth is restored.
During a routine Scale and Polish appointment at Smilemakers Dental, your dentist will clean all deposits and stains from teeth. They will remove tartar build up and polish your teeth using special dental instruments. After a professional clean, you will be able to feel the elevations and depressions of natural tooth and you will also get an extra-fresh feeling afterwards.
Your dentist will offer instructions for better oral care based on the results of your dental exam.
Extraction
We always aim to save the natural tooth and prevent it from future infection. However in certain cases where a tooth may be too damaged or too loose to be saved, extraction is unavoidable.
Reasons for tooth extraction:

A denture is a customized appliance that is worn over the gums to replace missing natural teeth. They are normally removable. Dentures help to improve chewing ability and speech and provide support for facial muscles by filling out your face and improving confidence as a result.
Your dentist may offer one of the following options:
- A Complete denture (a full set) replaces your upper or lower natural teeth
- Partial dentures that replace one or a few teeth and that are held in place by metal clips
- Implant supported denture for a more satisfactory experience.
Veneers are thin shells of porcelain bonded firmly to your teeth to recreate the natural shade or the shade and shape best suited for you. In cases of severe discoloration, fractures or tooth wear, they are very effective in restoring the original look of your teeth. They can also be used to transform your smile in cases where discoloration, spacing or crowding is a concern.
Dental Bridges
Missing teeth leave gaps which eventually cause the remaining nearby teeth to rotate or shift into the empty spaces, which may result in a bad bite. Dental bridges or dental implants offer the best means of filling in gaps or replacing missing teeth. Missing teeth are responsible for many problems like change in occlusion, shifting of the teeth in wrong directions, temporo-mandibular joint disorders and gum issues.
Dental crowns or caps are fixed to the outer surface of the tooth to restore shape, strength, function and appearance. They encase a tooth and act as a helmet on a badly damaged or decayed and are cemented on to the surface of the teeth. Since dental crowns cover the tooth, a dental crown in effect becomes the tooth’s new outer surface. Crowns can be made out of porcelain, zirconia (a very hard ceramic), metal or a combination of both.

What are dental implants?
It is a titanium screw that replaces the root of a missing natural tooth before being covered with a crown. They are functional and fit like a natural tooth. A dental implant is used to replace either a single tooth (single implant) or multiple teeth (multiple implants) in both the upper and lower jaw. It is the most advanced technological treatment option with long term success rate. It offers permanent replacement to loose and missing teeth and is used as an alternative to wearing dentures.
Clear Aligners
Braces are gaining popularity with discreet advances such as clear braces, now becoming a popular option among adults.
Clear Braces is a new and almost invisible way to straighten your teeth, using clear, removable and comfortable aligners. This involves a series of computer generated aligners that are custom-made for you. They are completely transparent. All you have to do is change the aligners every two to three weeks, and gradually, your teeth will move into the correct alignment. An added advantage is that these are removable which helps you to easily take off the aligners throughout your treatment which will allow you to brush your teeth and eat as normal.
Orthodontics is a specialization in dentistry which deals with the alignment of teeth. Fixed braces can be worn to gradually move crooked teeth into correct alignment, during treatment.

Fixed braces
Fixed braces are attached to the teeth and are not removed for eating or cleaning purposes. At Smilemakers Dental, we provide various different options for fixed braces.
Metal braces
This is the type of braces you most commonly see people wearing in which small brackets are bonded to the front part of the teeth and are joined together with metal wires. This provides the best means for a severe problem to be corrected by the orthodontist.
Ceramic braces
Ceramic braces are also a type of fixed braces that is bonded to the front part of the teeth. The only difference is that instead of the traditional metal attachments, the brackets are of a tooth-colored or clear ceramic material. But, these braces are not quite as strong as metal ones and may not be right for every type of correction. These are more esthetic and more expensive than metal braces. Additionally, they may also have longer treatment times.

Fluoride Treatment
Dental Sealants
It is a plastic coating that is bonded into the dental grooves of teeth to create a smooth surface thereby preventing cavities. They act as a barrier for bacteria, food and biofilm, and are usually placed on any fully-erupted tooth that is susceptible to cavities. Your child’s personalized risk assessment is essential before sealant application.
The comprehensive examination is an essential part of your child’s first visit with us. This includes a thorough examination of head and neck, as well as a nutritional and risk assessment. This helps to determine your child’s recall interval. Further, it can be used to ascertain if your child benefit from certain preventive or restorative treatments.
At Smilemakers Dental, we provide your child’s ‘caries risk assessment’ and we may recommend remineralizing treatment for your child’s teeth. Additionally, a specialized topical application that includes calcium and phosphate ions, called fluoride varnish, is also applied which helps strengthen your child’s teeth. Fluoride treatments are advocated on the basis of your child’s developmental status and risk assessment.

Posterior Stainless Steel Crowns
If your child’s tooth has extensive cavity, we will recommend placing a full coverage prefabricated stainless steel crown. It acts as a helmet and protects the tooth from further damage. It is somewhat similar in composition to a piece of jewelry. This option helps to provide protection and strength until your child’s tooth exfoliates.
Pulpotomy
Space Maintenance
If baby teeth are lost early, there is a risk of the adjacent teeth drifting into that space, posing as a hurdle to the eruption of teeth. At Smilemakers Dental, we provide a space maintainer to prevent this. This appliance serves to hold the space for the future eruption of your child’s permanent tooth.
The restorative material of choice for the treatment of cavities is known as a “white filling”. However, we provide colorful glitter effect filling too. This treatment may be required if your child has a cavity that extends into the inner portion of the tooth. If the cavity reaches the inner layer of the tooth, it is irreversible and requires some form of invasive treatment. For this, full or partial removal of the cavitated portion of the tooth is done. It is then replaced with a “white filling” to restore the tooth’s natural shape and form.
A pulpotomy is a root canal done for your child’s tooth. It may be necessary if a cavity has invaded the nerve tissue of your child’s tooth. There are different medicaments available for this procedure. At Smilemakers Dental, we use MTA, or Mineral Trioxide Aggregate, which has been shown to have a high rate of success.
